The beach and Lummus Park

South Beach is the southern part of the city of Miami Beach, on a barrier island across Biscayne Bay from mainland Miami. Lummus Park runs alongside the sand next to Ocean Drive, with lifeguard towers and a beachwalk. Swim near staffed lifeguard stands and follow the flag warnings; conditions change during the day.
Mornings are quieter and cooler. Bring water, reef-safe sun protection and shade; some beach equipment is rented by vendors, so check prices on the spot rather than assuming it is free.
Walk the Art Deco Historic District

The Miami Beach Architectural District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known for its 1930s and 1940s Art Deco, Streamline Moderne and Mediterranean Revival buildings. Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue are the easiest streets to explore on foot. The Miami Design Preservation League runs the Art Deco Welcome Center and offers its own guided walking tours, which Best Miami Tours does not sell.
If you prefer to cover more ground, the Miami Beach Highlights Bike Tour (listed at two hours) and the South Beach Segway Tour (listed at 90 minutes) both include historic-district sights. Compare them in our bike-or-Segway guide.
South Pointe Park and sunset
At the southern tip of the island, South Pointe Park has a pier, lawns and views of the Government Cut shipping channel, where cruise ships leave the Port of Miami. It is a pleasant end to a ride or walk and a good place for late-afternoon light.
On the water and in the air

For something faster, the one-hour jet ski tour runs on Biscayne Bay rather than off the beach, so check the meeting point. A private 30-minute South Beach air tour shows the shoreline and the Art Deco district from above; operators confirm weather, weight limits and the departure airport.
Getting around South Beach
The City of Miami Beach operates free trolley routes, including the South Beach loop. Parking is limited and priced; many visitors walk, ride or use the trolley. From downtown Miami, allow time for the MacArthur Causeway, especially on weekend evenings and during events.
